BUTTERFLY
Oh the emotional and physical torment caterpillars must feel. Aside from them being an overused metaphor for growth, did you know the cells that make all the parts of them butterflies aren’t actually created in the cocoon, they are born within the caterpillar, there are even types of caterpillars with wings that just stay under the skin it’s whole life until the rest of it’s body dissolves.
Which changes the way I view the cocoon, yes, things grow, but the things that grow were always inside, it wraps itself in a coffin as an intentional time of killing off everything else that has made it just a caterpillar and keeps things that are completely foreign to how it’s lived.
Imagine, up until the point of becoming a butterfly it must feel like all those extra pieces are garbage, like it’s crawling around with wings inside it feeling like they must somehow just be extra waste then boom, it all turns to something beautiful.
